Use WinSPC's blueprint mode to minimize data entry errors and simplify data collection on the shop floor
The blueprint data collection mode in WinSPC V 7.1 simplifies shop-floor data entry by displaying a blueprint or other image on the screen. This interface enables those collecting data to enter readings into an area on a blueprint image that corresponds to the aspect of a part they are measuring, making data collection a much simpler and error-free activity.
The blueprint mode

In the Blueprint mode of the WinSPC data collection interface (above) a red arrow visually connects the data entry cells for the Width variable to the casing opening. Seeing this, operators instantly know to measure the width of the casing opening and enter that reading in one of the cells provided. If there were other aspects of the casing to be measured, multiple sets of cells and arrows could be included on the same blueprint or image.
Setting up the blueprint interface
Setting up WinSPC to use the blueprint interface is easy. It is a two-phased task performed by a WinSPC administrator.
- Using a graphics program of some sort, create and save the image you want to use as a blueprint in WinSPC.
- Within WinSPC, in the Administrator window, create the part being manufactured and the variable to be measured, just as would be done for any other Data Collection interface.
- Single-click the part and click the New Blueprint tool bar button.

- Name the new blueprint.
- Double-click the new blueprint and, in the Blueprint Setup dialog box that is displayed, click Browse.

- In the Open dialog box that appears, navigate to and double-click the image you saved in step 1.
- Click OK to close the Blueprint Setup dialog box.
- Double-click the collection plan you want to use for the variable that is to have data collected through the blueprint interface. This displays the Collection Plan dialog box.
- In the Collection Plan dialog box:
- Apply the variable to the collection plan.
- With the variable selected, at User Interface Type, select Blueprint.

- Click the Blueprint sub-tab.
- At Blueprint, select the desired image.

- Click the Zoom in button.

- Notice the image is updated with the part and variable name and the data entry cells, the top one of which is blue.
-

- Click and drag the part and variable name to the position in which you'd like these to appear in Data Collection. (You may need to maximize the dialog box to do this.)

- Click and drag the tip of the red arrow so that it points to the area on the image that corresponds to the aspect of the part that will be measured

- Click OK in the Collection Plan dialog box. Everything is now set up for the blueprint interface to be used to collect data for the variable.
