Is it important to clean out my event log and, if so, how do I do this?

Is it important to clean out my event log and, if so, how do I do this?

Because a large event log can cause a slowdown in WinSPC's performance, it is a good idea to occasionally archive or delete it. Fortunately, these are easy actions to complete.

The more records there are in the event log, the longer it takes for WinSPC to write a new record to it. Over time, this slowdown may become noticeable to users. This is the reason it is a good idea to occasionally clean out the event log. For organizations which have WinSPC's audit trail enabled, a volume of records are written to the event log. For organizations who don't have WinSPC's audit trail enabled, there are still records written to the event log but these are far fewer in number.

There are two ways to clean out the event log: delete records or archive records. Deleting records is only possible if WinSPC's Deleting events in Event Log requires archiving them option is disabled. Archiving records is only possible if this option is enabled. (The Deleting events in Event Log requires archiving them option is found on the Audit/Security tab of the System Settings dialog box. The System Settings dialog box is accessed through the Administrator window's Tools menu.)

Deleting Event Log Records
  1. From the Tools menu in WinSPC's Administrator window, select Event Log.

This causes the event log to be displayed.

  2. If you only want to delete a subset of the event log records, apply the filter(s) which will produce the desired subset. (By default all filters are selected, which would result in all records being displayed on the Events tab. For detailed information on the Event Log, including the use of filters, see Setting Up WinSPC > Other Setup Tasks > Event Log, Using in WinSPC's Help system.)

  3. Click the Events tab.

  4. From the Events menu, click Select All.

  5. From the same Events menu, click Delete Selected Events.

  6. In the Confirm message that appears, click Yes.

Archiving Event Log Records

  1. Create a folder for the archive if one doesn't already exist. This folder can be on the local computer or the network.

  2. From the Tools menu in WinSPC's Administrator window, select Event Log.

This causes the event log to be displayed.
